Explore the ins and outs of skateboarding while in college, including the best skating colleges, skateboarding clubs, and scholarship opportunities.
Running a marathon is a daunting prospect in and of itself, but imagine completing the 26.2-mile race on a longboard. That’s what Connecticut College senior Sara Paulshock did this past fall at the Adrenalina Skateboard Marathon.
Skateboarding and longboarding have been popular activities among American youths for some time now, and they’ve become increasingly common ways for college students to get around campus. While skateboarding is not an official NCAA-sanctioned sport, many colleges have clubs that reserve time at local skate parks for members.
College Skateboarding: Campus Policies
Each school has its own policies regarding the use of skateboards on campus. At Occidental College, the use of skateboards and longboards is strictly prohibited on campus. Occidental students must leave campus and find the nearest skate park to enjoy a ride.
At other schools, such as Lewis & Clark College, the use of skateboards is restricted to certain areas and certain times. The school has a designated area that students can use after 4 p.m. on weekdays and weekends.
Not every school has restrictions on skateboards and longboards, however. Purchase University in New York simply states that individuals can use equipment for transportation (such as a bike) around most of the campus as long as they act responsibility.
If you’re an avid skateboarder who wishes to continue your activities in college, check the specific policies with every university you are considering. While it is not permitted at every school, you can certainly find one that fits your needs.
Skateboarding Clubs
College skateboarding and longboard clubs are great opportunities for you to meet new friends and continue an activity you’re passionate about. The St. Bonaventure Skate Club rents out indoor and outdoor arenas (depending on the weather) and has a “chill and grill” cookout every spring.
Many of these groups participate in community service. The University of Illinois Illini Longboard Club hosted a “Cruse for Cancer” event in which riders completed a 12-mile loop in order to race money for the American Cancer Society. Nearly $2,000 was raised in 2010.
Skateboarding Scholarships
Several privately funded groups provide financial aid to avid skateboarders who have graduated from high school and are about to enter college. The Patrick Kerr Skateboard Scholarships are given to multiple recipients each year. One $5,000 grand prize and several $1,000 runner-ups awards are given to individuals who demonstrate a strong academic record and meaningful contributions to the sport of skateboarding.
